Susan Barber Kahro

Susan Barber Kahro is a PhD candidate in music at York University in Toronto, is a sessional instructor at McMaster University where she conducts the chamber orchestra, and is an active adjudicator at various festivals. Her research interests are in Estonian music and brass repertoire. Susan holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Education from the University of Western Ontario and a Masters of Music at Northwestern University in Illinois. She studied in England with Howard Snell, principal trumpet of the LSO, in Chicago with Will Scarlett and has a diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto) Orchestral Training Program. For three summers Susan studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts with the Canadian Brass and performed as principal trumpet of the Canadian Chamber Orchestra.
Susan taught instrumental music for 29 years, was a Music and Arts Department Head and served as Music Consultant for the Peel District School Board. Her secondary school ensembles were regularly recognized at national festivals for their high level of excellence. For over 25 years Susan played principal trumpet with the Oshawa Durham Symphony Orchestra and performed as concerto soloist works by Arutunian, Haydn, Hertel and Tartini. Currently, she enjoys playing flugelhorn with the Intrada Brass of Oakville. Susan was a contributing writer for Ontario’s Curriculum Policy Document for the Arts in 1997, was the recipient of the Mississauga Musician of the Year Award in 1994 and the Peel District School Board’s Award of Excellence in 2010.
