Susan Barber Kahro is PhD student in music at York University, a sessional instructor at McMaster University where she conducts the concert band, and is an active adjudicator at various festivals. Susan holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Education from the University of Western Ontario and completed her Masters of Music degree at Northwestern University in Illinois. She studied in England with Howard Snell, principal trumpet of the LSO, in Chicago with Will Scarlett and has a diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto) Orchestral Training Program. For three summers Susan studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts with the Canadian Brass and performed as principal trumpet of the Canadian Chamber Orchestra.
Susan was a high school band director for 29 years, was a Music and Arts Department Head and served as Music Consultant for the Peel District School Board. Her secondary school ensembles achieved high levels of excellence that earned provincial and national recognition. For over 25 years Susan played principal trumpet with the Oshawa Durham Symphony Orchestra and performed as concerto soloist of works by Arutunian, Haydn and Tartini. She was a contributing writer for Ontario’s Curriculum Policy Document for the Arts in 1997, was the recipient of the Mississauga Musician of the Year Award in 1994 and the Peel District School Board’s Award of Excellence in 2010.
