Sarah Herbert

Session: Warming up to Build Confidence 

Sarah Herbert is on the faculty at the University of Wyoming as the Visiting Assistant Professor of Trumpet. At UW, Dr. Herbert teaches applied trumpet, jazz and music education courses, and conducts the UW Trumpet Ensemble. Prior to teaching at UW, she was a faculty member at both the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Miami University Regionals in Hamilton, Ohio.

Herbert’s recent performing career has been diverse and includes performances with professional orchestras, chamber and jazz/commercial groups such as the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra and Brass Quintet, the University of Wyoming Faculty Brass Quintet and the Whitney Center Jazz Orchestra. She was also an active performer in Cincinnati, Ohio with the Washington Ave Brass Quintet, The Belairs, The Casino Players Ensemble, Bach Chorale Singers, Fillmore Brass Band and Wind Ensemble, and the Richmond Symphony Orchestra (Indiana). Additionally, she has played in numerous musical theater orchestras in Cincinnati and Albuquerque, New Mexico and performed as a cruise ship musician for Norwegian Cruise Lines based out of Miami, Florida.

In addition to teaching and performing, Dr. Herbert is also a committed researcher. As the 2016
recipient of the prestigious Presser Foundation Graduate Research Award she has been able to pursue an innovative project which has resulted in the commissioning and recording of three new works for the unique instrumental combination of trumpet and guitar quartet. Herbert has performed these works at both the 2017 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania with the Texas Guitar Quartet and at the 2019 International Women’s Brass Conference in Tempe, Arizona with the Albuquerque, New Mexico based Rio Grande Guitar Quartet.

A native of Portland, Oregon, Herbert completed her Doctor of Music from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 2017. She also holds a Master of Music and Certification in Music Education from the University of New Mexico and a Bachelor of Music from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
