Philip Smith joined the Hugh Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia as the William F. and Pamela P. Prokasy Professor in the Arts in August 2014. In addition to teaching his trumpet studio, he is the Bandmaster of the UGA British Brass Band, member of the faculty Georgia Brass Quintet, and coach of the Bulldog Brass Society. This new position follows his retirement from the New York Philharmonic after 36 years of service as Principal Trumpet.
Mr. Smith received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School, and in January 1975, while still a student, was appointed to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Smith has appeared regularly around the world as soloist, recitalist, and clinician. As trumpet soloist with the New York Philharmonic, he has performed numerous world and US premieres, in addition to the standard repertoire.
Mr. Smith regularly conducts brass bands and brass ensembles, and has hosted and conducted the New York Philharmonic Brass and Percussion annual “Holiday Brass” concerts on multiple occasions. He also conducted this group at the Dedication Ceremony of the September 11 Museum in New York City on May 15, 2014. He recently conducted the UGA British Brass Band to a Third-Place prize in the First Section of the North American Brass Band Association Championships in March 2017.
Mr. Smith can be heard on numerous recordings; solo, brass band, and orchestral. His film credits include Punchline (1998), Sphere (1998), The Rookie (2002), and Manchurian Candidate (2004).
In 2005, Mr. Smith was made an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music (Hon RAM) and in 2006, Mr. Smith was given the International Trumpet Guild Honorary Award.
