Oswaldo Zapata began playing trumpet in his hometown of Caldas, Antioquia, Colombia (near Medellín). He is currently the Assistant Professor of Music – Trumpet and Director of Mariachi at Texas A&M International University. Dr. Zapata holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance with an Emphasis in Instrumental Pedagogy from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, a Certificate of Graduate Study in Music Performance and a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of South Carolina, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Trumpet Performance from Arizona State University. While at ASU, he was a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the mariachi program and trumpet studio.
He has studied trumpet under Prof. David Hickman, Prof. James Ackley, Allen Vizzutti, and Prof. Fernando Parra. Dr. Zapata regularly performs in a wide variety of musical settings, including solo performances, wind ensemble, symphony orchestra, trumpet ensemble, brass quintet, and Latin ensembles. He performs as a member of the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra in Laredo, Texas, where he lives with his wife and son.
