Session: A Musical Journey Through The Country of 1000 Rhythms

Oscar is the trumpet professor at the University of Caldas, and director of the Redemptorist conservatory. He received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music with emphasis on trumpet (EAFIT). He is an active soloist, composer and administrator.

He began his studies in the Caldas Departmental Band Program. His trumpet teachers included Juan Carlos Valencia and Juan Fernando Avendaño. He has received training in Venezuela, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Brazil thanks to scholarships from the Mazda Foundation for art and science.

His compositions have won many of the most important band contests in Colombia between 2010 and 2021. His arrangements and compositions have been performed by reknown ensembles such as the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, Zaragoza Wind Ensemble, Dominican Philharmonic Orchestra, Salvador Youth Symphony Orchestra, Orléans Symphony Orchestra, University of Wisconsin Symphony Band, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Totó la momposina, Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra, Colombian Symphony Orchestra, Caldas Symphony Orchestra, Cali Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. In addition, he has participated as a composer, arranger and trumpeter in more than 10 record productions.

For many years he was a member of the Kanna Jazz Brass ensemble with which he recorded two record productions, and was the winner of the National Hall Festival. In additrion, he was one of the Semi-finalist in the Second Eric Aubier Latin American Trumpet Competition. He was professor of trumpet at the Technological University of Pereira and principal trumpet of the Caldas Symphony Orchestra for 15 years. In 2019 he toured Europe with his group 5 pa’l mundo that included a recital at the Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona. The concert program was totally designed by his musical works.

As a conductor, he has worked with the Caldas Symphony Orchestra, the Manizales Municipal Band, the Caldas University Symphonic Band, the Caldas University Brass Ensemble (a group he founded) and the Redemptorist Conservatory Symphony Band which he currently is still in charge.

As a soloist he has featured with the Caldas Symphony Orchestra, CIMA International Music Festival, Manizales Municipal Band, Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, Caldas Chamber Orchestra, Valle Departmental Band, University of Caldas Symphony Band, International Festival of Manizales. In addition, he has performed, many trumpet recitals around the world, among which the Virtual Conference of the International Trumpet Guild (USA), Mas Palomas Trumpet Fest (Gran Canaria – Spain), the Ciutat de Xixona International Trumpet Festival (Spain) stand out. , FIT International Trumpet Festival (Costa Rica).

He is currently the trumpet professor at the University of Caldas, director and founder of the Redemptorist Conservatory and director of the ensemble 5pa’l mundo with which he has made two record productions with works of his own. In addition, he continuously collaborates in various musical educational projects in different regions of Colombia, Latin America and Europe.
