Dr. Karen Gustafson is Professor of Music at Red Deer College in Red Deer, Alberta where she teaches trumpet and conducts the Symphonic Winds. She has performed from Italy to Malaysia to Australia and across the Americas as a trumpet soloist and with the Borealis Brass as well as an orchestral musician. She currently performs trumpet with the Central Alberta Chamber Players and regularly performs in ensembles in the area such as the Red Deer Symphony and Altius Brass. Other performance credits include performing at the International Alliance of Women in Music, the Bach Chamber Players of St. Paul (Minnesota), the Minnesota Orchestra, Windsor Symphony, Phantom of the Opera Orchestra (Toronto), Enid Symphony (Oklahoma), Niagara Symphony, and the Shaw Festival Orchestra. Dr. Gustafson has also performed at the UNESCO World Forum on Music (Los Angeles), the International Women’s Brass Conference, the World Saxophone Congress, and the International Trumpet Guild Conference. Recently released are albums “Pacific Crossings” (2017) and the Borealis Brass “Roman Holidays” (2010.)
Dr. Gustafson has a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Trumpet Performance and Wind Band Conducting from the University of Minnesota where she studied trumpet with David Baldwin and Gary Bordner and wind band conducting with Craig Kirchhoff and Jerry Luckhardt, a Master of Music degree in trumpet performance from Northwestern University (Illinois,) a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria (B.C.) and a diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto) Orchestral Training Program.
