John Raymond

Evening Concert

Grammy-nominated trumpeter, flugelhornist, and composer John Raymond is making a name for himself as one of the most promising, genre-bending musicians in jazz today. Raymond is “steering jazz in the right direction” (Downbeat Magazine) by pushing its boundaries, seamlessly incorporating indie-rock, folk and electronic influences into his music. “This is jazz, yes, but jazz with an open mind.” (Something Else).

Raymond has released nine albums under his own name since 2012, and has received praise from Stereogum, the New York Times, Downbeat, JazzTimes and more. His most recent album, “Shadowlands,” is a collaboration with singer/songwriter S. Carey (of Bon Iver). Raymond has also performed with jazz luminaries such as Billy Hart, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Orrin Evans, Linda May Han Oh, Gilad Hekselman, and Cory Wong, and has also recorded with artists including Sara Bareilles, Darnell Davis, and Sandra McCracken.

John has also established himself as a sought-after educator, both as the Jazz Trumpet Professor at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and as a guest clinician and soloist at schools around the world. His book, “The Jazz Trumpet Routine,” explores an approach to fundamentals through the lens of a creative improviser, and has sold over 750 copies since its release in 2020. He is also the creator and host of the podcast “The Trumpet Summit” where he talks shop with other master jazz trumpeters including Tom Harrell, Sean Jones, Ingrid Jensen, the Snarky Puppy Horns, and more.
