Session: How to Avoid Career-ending Injury as a Trumpet Player…There’s More than Focal Dystonia 

Dr. Jeremy Stanek holds music degrees from the University of Missouri and the University of New Mexico. Prior to becoming a physician, he was a professional trumpet player, performing with groups around the world.  His performing career was cut short due to developing a condition known as focal dystonia. Not wanting his education and experience as a performer to go to waste, he chose medicine as his second career, and he obtained his medical degree from the University of Missouri.  He completed his intern year of internal medicine training at the Medical College of Wisconsin, followed by advanced residency training in physical medicine & rehabilitation (physiatry) at the University of Missouri, and completed a sports medicine fellowship at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, where he was also a provider in the Medical Program for Performing Artists and treated performers of all levels, including the St. Louis Symphony and St. Louis Ballet.  As a physician, he has published several peer-reviewed journal articles, lectured at universities and hospitals, and given presentations at numerous international conferences. He currently serves as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at Stanford University, where he is building a performing arts medicine program.
