Glober Calambro

Session: All in the Band

Glober started playing the trumpet at a very young age. He was only 10 years old when he joined the Banda Navotas 98, a community band based in Navotas City, Philippines. His first teachers were Benny Santuyo and Norberto de Jesus, both musicians who were also from his native town. At the age of 12, he already became their community band’s soloist. His desire to enhance his craft and his passion for music prompted him to take formal lessons. In 2001, he entered the University of the Philippines College of Music as a trumpet major under the tutelage of Professor Raymundo Maigue.

In 2004, he joined the National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) and won the second prize in Category C. Glober also became a 3-time Philippine delegate to the Southeast Asian Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble (SAYOWE) from 2004 to 2006. During these years, he also became the principal trumpet player in several bands and orchestras such as the Manila Symphony Orchestra (2004), SAYOWE (2004), University of the Philippines (UP) Orchestra (2006), UP Jazz Ensemble (2003), UP Jazz Friends (2003) and UP Symphonic Band (2003). In college, he was also a consistent band scholar of the UP ROTC Band Scholarship Program.

In 2007, Glober became a member of the country’s national orchestra, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. He is currently the Assistant Principal for Trumpet. In 2012, he joined the Philippine Band Association (PHILBANDA).

As a professional session musician, Glober has joined the band and orchestra of several local productions of Broadway musicals such as The Man of La Mancha (2005), Beauty and the Beast (2005), The Sound of Music (2006), Jekyll and Hyde (2011), The Producers (2013), Scrooge (2014), Annie (2016) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (2018). Because of his immense talent and skills, he has been tapped to play for touring productions of Broadway musicals that have included the Philippines in their tour itineraries. Such touring productions include Wicked (2014), Chicago (2014), Singin’ In The Rain (2015), Les Miserable (2016), The Sound of Music (2017) and Wicked (2017).

Glober continues to improve his craft by joining workshops such as the Henry Nowak Trumpet workshop held in Manila in 2017. He also pays it forward by giving lectures and workshops to young musicians and students. Under the auspices of Philbanda and the PPO, he was able to give lectures and workshops to the following schools, local government units and institutions: Philippine Airforce Band, 2017 (Philbanda), Baguio City, 2018 (PPO), Rizalian Youth Symphonic Band, 2018 (Philbanda), Aklan Province, 2019 (PPO), Batangas City High School for the Arts, 2019 (Philbanda) and Palawan State University, 2019 (PPO).

In 2019, Glober was one of 11 Philippine delegates to the “Asia in Resonance Gala Concert” held in Japan. With the PPO, he performed in the following concerts abroad — “An Ode to Friendship: The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra in Beijing” 2011, “The PPO at Carnegie Hall” 2016, and the Asia Orchestra Week, 2018.
