Session: Playing trumpet in a military band: The how-to survival guide of performing band music and not destroying your chops
Christopher Sala grew up in Clifton Park, NY and Wilbraham, MA. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music in Music Education and Trumpet Performance and a Master of Music degree from The Florida State University in Trumpet Performance, where he was a member of the faculty brass quintet. He was the first place winner of the International Trumpet Guild Solo Competition, the ITG Mock Orchestra Competition, and the second place winner of the National Trumpet Competition. He has also been a semi-finalist in the Vassily Brandt Competition in Saratov, Russia and the Maurice André Competition in Paris. Before coming to the area he toured the United States and Costa Rica with Atlantic Brass and Epic Brass, playing recitals and as featured guest artists with symphony orchestras across the country.
This is his 15th season with the Annapolis Symphony, starting out as third trumpet and then second trumpet, and now as principal trumpet. He is also principal trumpet of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C., where he is a frequent soloist. In his Navy Band career he has performed for the last three Presidents and often plays for several Foreign Dignitaries and Government Officials each year. He also performs with the Baltimore Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Maryland Symphony, Baltimore Choral Arts and Bayfield Brass.
