Session: The Pedagogy Behind Duets: Improving Practice and Performance Together (with Benjamin Hay)

Andrew Cheetham joined the Texas State University School of Music in Fall 2018 as an Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Studies. Andrew attended the University of Texas at Austin where he earned a Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Trumpet Performance degrees. Andrew holds a Doctorate in Performance from the Eastman School of Music, where he received a Certificate of Excellence in Performance, the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award for his area, and a minor in Music History. 

 
As a classical trumpeter, Andrew has held principal trumpet positions in the Danville (IL)Symphony Orchestra, the North Arkansas Symphony, the Prairie Ensemble Chamber Orchestra, and has performed with the Austin Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Tulsa Symphony Brass, and others. As a jazz musician, Andrew is a founding member of the Four Other Brothers Jazz Trumpet Quartet and has collaborated with musicians including Bobby Shew, Slide Hampton, Peter Erskine, Conrad Herwig, Gregg Bissonette, and many others. Andrew is a frequent adjudicator and clinician, and regularly travels nationally and internationally for jazz festivals, clinics and masterclasses. 
 
Prior to accepting his position at Texas State, Andrew served as Associate Professor of Trumpet at Eastern Illinois University, and has taught in similar trumpet and jazz roles at Oklahoma State University, Nazareth College, and the Austin public schools. Andrew was a trumpeter and ensemble leader in the United States Army, where he performed in countless ceremonies, concerts and conventions all over the country. Andrew received two Army Achievement medals and an Army Commendation Medal for his service.
